Learning outcome of Waiting for the Barbarian novel

Hello Readers,

Our Department of English (MKBU),Head of the department Dr.Dilip Barad had organized two days 8 ,9, January 2020 guest lecture on African literature novel Waiting For the Barbarians. Guest Professor Ravi Zala has explained this novel to the reference of various example of the novel. So this is enhancing experience for me so here I share my review of the Understanding of novel Waiting For Barbarians.

Novel -Waiting for the Barbarians

Waiting for the Barbarians novel is written by M.J.Coetzee.

M.J.Coetzee Introduction-


John Maxwell Coetzee (born 9 February 1940) is a South African–born. He is novelist, essayist, linguist, translator and recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. He has also won the Booker Prize twice. He is well known for his unique writing skill.

Waiting for the Barbarians novel Characters-

The Magistrate
The Magistrate is the first-person narrator and flawed protagonist of the novel. And also he is ruler of unnamed empire.


The nomad girl
The nomad girl is one of Joll's torture victims, who gets left behind after her father is killed in Joll's torture chamber.

Colonel Joll-
He is antagonist of this novel and he is responsible for empire's people struggled.

Warrant officer Mandel
Mandel is Colonel Joll's henchman. He is the sadistic officer who personally torture the magistrate.

The Birdlike Girl-
She is good looking prostitutes and her relation with Magistrate.

Summary-

The story is narrated in the first person by the unnamed magistrate of a small colonial town that exists as the territorial frontier of "the Empire". Magistrate lived in town to feel peaceful but Colonel Jall believed this empire people are Barbarians and he and his team caught town's people and torched them to asking who is real Barbarians. Helpless Magistrate relation with young birdlike girl of empire then he sported to innocent empire's people but he couldn’t erased body mark of innocent empire’s people because ultimately they(colonial) are responsible for innocent people struggle. Then with body mark empire's people lived life as usual.

Central Theme-

Imperialism- According to my observation this novel central theme is  imperialism  because empire’s people struggled behind Britisher imperial power responsible.

Comparison with other texts-

Sir gave references of A Tempest by Amie Ceasaire and Foe by Coetzee. There are text also follows same problem of colonialism.
