Expert Lectures on ELT by Professor Atanu Bhattacharya

Here I share my review about expert lectures.

On 25, 26 and 27 January we had expert lectures by Professor Atanu Bhattacharya in the Department of English Maharaja Krishnakumarsinghji Bhavnagar University. Professor Atanu Bhattacharya came from Central University of Gandhinagar. And he delivered lectures on ETL paper-


First of all sir explained development of ELT.  And said language can not be learning to join any spoken classes because it is practical process of learning and learning is not set dialogue because conversation always change it depends on dialogue.

There are various difficulty for learning language for example diamatic gender- Bagla hasn't diamatic gender that's why it is difficult to identify He or She. And also phonetic is also important for language teaching for example- how to pronounce ship and sheep in different ways.
Sir give us glimpsing of teaching methods like Direct method, Natural method, Communicative method ,Audio lingual method and argument and concluding teaching method used by Henry Derozio who is famous poet as well as professor and Toru Dutt family also follow this method of teaching so it is like movement of teaching method.

Sir expand ideas of Critic -

Critic Noam Chomsky suggesting that children are born with language and they have universal grammar. So these are two terms of Linguistics competence and Linguistic performance. While other critic Dell Hymes agree with Linguistics competence it is divided in two discourse cohesion and coherence.

Second day session-
Sir said about one notable observations which I can't imagine before this lecture, sir said why Indian has problem to learn article because we use number formatic in the sentence while British language has article like a, an and the.

And highlight literature through language learning- It is divided in two process cognitive and metacognitive- Cognitive means understand simple meaning chair is chair while anyone ask what do you identify or think ? And why Shakespeare is famous ? So think and define reason it is process of Metacognitive.

Teaching poetry
 How to teaching poetry ? With help of image and developed vocabulary drill of students and suggest to students define register word and tone or attitude of writer.

Which type of material should helpful for students -

Material should helpful for learners to feel at easy and confident. Exposure towards authentic use of language. Task of teacher now to navigation to student. Increasing students to do Critical think / Expande Critical review.

Third day session-

Testing, Evaluation and Assessment-

Testing means test specific particular objective, evaluation is general term it is not about particular subject but it is general ideas of particular there score can not get score. Assessment is feedback, it is require to say what we have to do at the next time.

There are type of test - 1) Achievement test - for example Semester end test
2) Diagnostic test - For example Oxford practice grammar there you know what are your strength of English and what are your weakness of language.
3) Placement test- For example set norm like first class second class.

To set rubric and evaluate students spoken skills-
For example check which students belonging to which category-  Set category like fluent, competence, Average, poor

Research field-

At the past research studies and the future of English research studies . which are topic best for research scholar. If research scholar want to research on language then they have to do Linguistics explorations working towards an integrated multimodal approach -technical Orientation, social orientation, social history orientation.

Research scholar want to do research on visual cultures- Film studies
At the 19th century focus on film studies, how film produce such kind of culture and state, how the audience watch film and their reaction about film. Genre study is very popular study. Then visual culture:- DC-Digital culture, DH- Digital Humanity

A note on method-
English study is not about theme and character study. Interdisciplinarity - novels of exchange and negotiation. Archival studies- Retrieval and reinterpretation. Qualitative explorations- situated research , oral/Narrative modes- narratives of the people.
