Culture studies- Workshop by Dr.Kalyani Vallath review of workshop

Hello Readers,

If you are literature lover, teacher, scholar ,students then you have few ideas about culture studies but you are not as per I mentioned name then its ok you can just read and enhance your knowledge. On 27 December 2019 our (Department of English, MKBU) had organized workshop on cultural studies by research scholar Dr.Kalyani Vallath.

My understanding about the concept of cultural studies-

Here I write some of the concept of cultural studies but it is not enough because cultural studies called slade of bowl.
 What cultural studies?
🧐Interdisciplinary study
🧐Relates to the large society
🧐Political dynamic of mass media and everyday cultural practice
🧐 Cultural transforms individual experience, social realities and power relations

            Cultural studies development in Britain as a reaction against human studies. These are two movement liberal humanism and arthodox Marxism. The discussion of culture and civilization in literary studies from Matthew Arnold's essay Culture and Anarchy.
Then various thinker contribute their ideas about cultural studies but most of thinker thoughts are different from each other because of time changing society culture also changed. This is reason culture studies thinker are divided in two schools - Frankfurt school and New left school
Frankfurt school- They followed capitalism as well as orthodox Marxism ideas.
New left school-  In this school critic partly reaction against orthodox, Marxism and communist party. They talk about gay people, woman wright etc. It is broad thinking movement. Stuart Hall is first black thinker of this school.

These are thinkers of cultural studies-

🤔Raymond Williams- He against high notion of culture and he believes man live it is reality. He studies on dominant culture.

🤔 Richard Hoggart-  He believes culture is not only about elite class but it is also about working class. Because without working class elite culture isn't existing. That's why working class is part of capitalism.

🤔 E.P. Thompson- Nobody represent working history then he wrote first time about working class history it is also representation of their culture.

🤔Stuart Hall- His cultural studies most of belong to collaborate writing. He studied  Culture is folding by encoding and decoding meaning.
 🤔 Michael Foucault- He studies culture is depend on power and knowledge.

🤔 Pierre Bourdieu-  He studied cultural intermediaries.

🤔 Black Atlantic-  He studies counter culture of modernity.

🤔 Edward Soja- He gives three step of place culture studies.

Theory and Methods
Anti- dogmatic - Critical thinking is new way of analysis we have to look at thing without any prejudice.
Hegelian Dialectical Method- It is struggle of opposites.

Cultural studies including these are studies

• Subculture studies
• Trauma studies
• Globalisation studies
• Visual culture studies
• Queer studies
• Mass culture studies
• Film studies
• Food studies 
• Body studies

How would you explain a layman about cultural studies?
I will try to explain them with examples of their life style and their culture. So may be it becomes easy for them.

If you are asked in interview to teach  cultural studies How would you introduce it ?

First of all I will say what  is cultural studies and main concept of cultural studies and which areas it becomes part of cultural studies, major writer constribution on cultural studies.

How many examples from the sessions were  so catchy that you will never forget it?

When Mam explain interdisciplinary studies at that time she explains with examples of Kerala people' habits of awakening and Gujarat people habits of awakening at the morning. Both are interdisciplinary of state habits.

Then she explains how culture related to the largest society with examples of India as well as Canada and USA also like same multicultural country.

Then she explains how cultural transforms individual experience with example of which kind we make ourselves for other marriage.

Encoding and decoding culture explain with example of advertisement of Trakam power it most popular in Kerala.
Materialism - it is artifact everything for example mineral water in the bottle.
This kind Mam explain with various kind of examples.

I believe some of day of our life it like unforgettable day so this workshop day is also unforgettable day of my life.
